A Brief History of Tacos

The Early History of Tacos

The word "taco" first appeared in print in the 16th century, and it's thought to come from the Nahuatl word "tlahco", which means "half" or "in the middle." This is likely in reference to the tacos being folded in half to eat. Another popular theory is that the word “taco” comes from the influence of Medieval Spanish on the Nahuatl. During the same time that the Spanish “tortilla” replaced Nahuatl “tlaxcalli,” the Spanish word “taco” came to stand for the ACTUAL word the Nahuah used for rolled-up tortillas —Tlaxcalmimilli (roughly meaning Tortilla cylinders).
